Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

A creative writing event was held at True’s Yard today. Participants were asked to listen to clips from the newly opened Sound Archive and use the information they learned to write a diary entry, a letter or a newspaper article about living in the North End.

Letter from the North End by Lucy Girdlestone (age 9)

Dear King Edward,

My name is Moaner. I live in the Northend of King’s Lynn and I am 14 and I am learning about fishing. My dad is a fisherman and goes out to sea every week so I never see him. he catches cockles, mussels, oysters and herring and brings them home to sort out on the floor. Guess who has to help, ME!!! And as for my 7 brothers and 11 sisters and they are a pain. We have to share one tiny little bed. Jack the youngest brother is always wriggling and knocking people out of the bed. Angry Pants (Sue) is always beating me up, she only does it when Mums not looking. What do you think we have for dinner? Fish stew and if you think thats bad it had bones in it as well. My mum works really hard on taking the fish guts out, scrubbing the cockles and remember she has to look after us the 19 little horrors. Next week my dads coming home and he has asked me to go help him sell the fish. He always picks me but I’m not aloud to talk to him because there were always people wanting  to buy the fish. The only time my dad talks to me is when he tells me what fish to get. I spend all the time there and have to get up really early and we leave at night at about 10:00pm. When I leave I’m very worn out and got no energy but nobody cares. My Mum says we are going to see the royal gates.

Yours Sincerely,

Moaner
