True’s Talk: Chauncey Hare Townshend: Patron Of West Lynn Church @ True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum

Dr. Julian Litten will be presenting his insights into the life of Chauncey Hare Townshend (1798-1868). A former student at Eton and Cambridge (B.A. 1821; M.A. 1824), he took holy orders but was not long active in the ministry. Townshend was a colourful character who was not only an amateur painter and musician but also became interested in clairvoyance and mesmerism. Dr. Litten will discuss the role Townshend played in the history of West Lynn Church.

True’s Talks: A History of Fish and Chips @ True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum

Following our intriguing exhibition at True’s Yard charting the introduction of fish and chips into our national psyche as the familiar and favourite slap up meal it is today, Jeff Hoyle, local columnist and historian, will be presenting a synopsis of the research undertaken to put the exhibition together. Jeff will look at the origins of the meal, and how it rapidly became popular in King’s Lynn as well as the nation’s favourite, providing the much need staple food during the wars for the working classes, opportunities for some of Lynn’s first female entrepreneurs in the late Victorian period and fond memories for many of Lynn’s townsfolk.

True’s Talks: Masters and Merchants: 17th Century Trade in the Wash @ True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum

Dr. Michael Gilbert will be presenting the 6th talk in our latest series of True’s Talks at the museum this autumn. His talk will present a stimulating account of the to-ings and fro-ings of the merchants in the Wash during the 17th century, illuminating the nature of maritime trade at this time as well as the alliances and the rivalries this encompassed.

A Portrait of Henry VIII on the King's Lynn Charter dating to 1524 (West Norfolk Council)Dr. Paul Richards will be giving the second talk in this season’s True’s Talks series, titled ‘500 Years Since Lynn’s Tudor Political Revolution (1524-2024)’ to explain the changes brought about to King’s Lynn during this tumultuous period in history under Henry VIII’s rule.
