Need some help? You can improve your family history research skills with Vic and Val Taylor

Saturday mornings 10.30am – 12pm.

Vic and Val have been running family history sessions at True’s Yard since 2010.

First as a weekly course and then as drop in sessions which assist all researchers, whether a beginner or experienced. They cover:
•Introduction and background information on how to start to research family history
•Census Records and Settlement Records.
•Parish Records and how to order Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates from the General Record Office or online.
•Use of Local Records Offices, Public Libraries, Family History Societies.
•Searching for wills/military records, etc.
•Dating and “reading” photographs.
•Use of Ancestry.co.uk (the Library edition of which is accessible in the Museum’s Research Centre for free), Findmypast, Familysearch, The Genealogist, etc.
•Update the class with anything new in the field of genealogy.
•Discuss the areas of research undertaken by each person that week and assist with any stumbling blocks – the whole group sharing experiences

Local History day is held on the 1st Saturday in June every year. This year we decided to go one step further and hold an entire week dedicated to the incredible history of this town.

 

Tuesday 28th May 10.30am – 2.00pm Family Fun Day– Time travelling games, trail, dressing-up, puppets, prize draw, homemade cake and object handling of ancient finds! Suitable for all ages- Free

Wednesday 29th May 1pm-2pm – True’s Talk – Topic TBC- Free

Thursday 30th May 11am-3pmDay School Frederick Savage (1828-97) Engineer, Northender & MayorJoin Dr Julian Litten & Dr Paul Richards at True’s Yard and St Nicholas Chapel – looking at Savage’s amazing achievements and the Victorian way of death. £5pp (Lunch not included).

 

Friday- 31st May 1pm- True’s Talk- The 150th Anniversary of the Alexandra Dock

Learn all about the history of this incredible still working Dock. Plus, all those who attend the talk will get a special preview of the new exhibition which opens to the public on 1st June. Free

 

Saturday 1st June- Local History in England Day!

10:30am- 2:30pm Open Day- The Pat Midgley Research Centre will be open to the public. Discover the rich source material held at the PMRC and more about family history.

 

11:30am & 2:30pm1000 years in 10 minutes! An abridged history of King’s Lynn– performed by Museum Manager – Lindsey Bavin. Suitable for all ages. Free.

 

12noonExhibition Opening The 150th Anniversary of The Alexandra Dock (1869-2019)

 

1pm North End Guided Tour what better way to get to know your local history than to walk the streets and see the marks our ancestors left on the landscape? Hear the remarkable stories of the people of the North End and round it all off with a cup of complimentary tea or coffee in our newly restored Georgian Tearoom. £5pp
