TRUE’S YARD FISHERFOLK MUSEUM

KING’S LYNN: ASPECTS OF LOCAL HISTORY

  • Six Thursday afternoons (1pm-3pm)

  • Course content and aims.
  • What we have lost and gained.
  • Sampling sources (Pat Midgley Research Centre).

  1. Bishop’s Lynn
  • What we have gained – today’s Medieval Town – an exceptional historic built environment.
  • The town’s archaeological excavations (1963-70) and the history hidden underground. Where are the principal sites?
  • Illustrated talk.
  • Group discussion.

 

 

  1. Renaissance Lynn
  • The age of Shakespeare in King’s Lynn: People, Places and Drama.
  • Lynn’s classical architecture and a townscape transformed (1680-1720).
  • Illustrated talk.
  • Group discussion.

 

 

  1. Georgian Lynn
  • The grand houses and merchant families in the riverside streets of Lynn.
  • The Bagge family: Brewers, Ship-owners and traders.
  • Illustrated talk.
  • Visit to St Nicholas Chapel to view 18th century mural monuments.

 

  1. Victorian & Edwardian Lynn
  • Lynn’s First Industrial Revolution and the impact and legacy of Frederick Savage (1826-1857).
  • The fortunes of the North End fisherfolk community (1869-1958).
  • Illustrated talk.
  • Group discussion.

 

  1. Lynn & Europe since 1100
  • Bishop’s Lynn and Hanseatic Europe 1271-1561: Commerce and Politics.
  • The principal trade routes and imports/exports since 1720.
  • Illustrated talk.
  • Group discussion.
  • Course evaluation.
  • Future research opportunities and topics.

 

This course will take place in the Museum’s Education Room, which is located on the first floor. Please inform a member of staff if you need to use the lift. Each session will have a short comfort break and there is a Tea Room onsite where refreshments can be purchased.

The cost of this course is £30 per person, payable by Thursday 2nd April. Cheques must be made out to The North End Trust.
